Varicose Vein
Treatments
Varicose veins are a common and treatable condition that affect up to 40% of the population. The Mayfield Clinic by Dr Nestor offers a variety of minimally invasive treatments that are safe, effective and customised to your individual needs. Together with consultant Vascular Surgeon Anne Burdess, we can help you take a step towards reclaiming your confidence and comfort.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are twisty, bulging veins in your legs. You may have very visible veins which are bothering you, or you may have not much to see, but the symptoms cause you discomfort. The issues are caused when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. When these become damaged, the blood can flow backwards and collect in the vein causing it to become swollen and enlarged. This increased pressure causes a wide range of symptoms including swelling, pain, itching, throbbing and tiredness. Treating varicose veins closes down these faulty veins relieving your symptoms and improving the appearance of your legs. The blood is diverted through other, healthy veins.

If you’re experiencing any of the following, book a consultation to find out how The Mayfield Clinic by Dr Nestor can help.
- Aching legs: If legs feel heavy, restless or cramp at night, there’s a good chance varicose veins are the culprit.
- Appearance concerns: If varicose veins are making you self-conscious, preventing you from enjoying activities you love, it’s time to address them.
- Progressive symptoms: If you notice your lower legs becoming darker, itchy, swollen or experience bleeding from your veins, don’t ignore these signs.
What happens during a consultation for vascular surgery?
Anne Burdess at The Mayfield Clinic will answer any queries you have about your veins and will assess your legs during a consultation to ensure any treatment decisions are made in alignment with your individual circumstances. To gain a clear understanding of the extent and nature of your varicose veins, we’ll also perform a non-invasive duplex ultrasound scan to provide a detailed map of your leg veins, allowing Anne to identify the specific veins that require treatment. You’ll then be given information to take home and digest before booking treatment.

Will Varicose Vein Surgery work for me?
With Anne Burdess as your guide, you can embark on a journey towards varicose vein freedom, reclaiming the confidence and comfort you deserve. Her commitment to providing personalised care, comprehensive treatment options, and the latest medical advancements ensures that you receive the best possible experience.
For most patients, The Mayfield Clinic recommends ClosurefastTM radiofrequency ablation, a highly regarded procedure that utilises radiofrequency heat energy to seal the affected vein closed. This innovative technique is preferred over laser ablation due to its superior effectiveness in reducing pain and bruising after the treatment, allowing you to resume your normal activities more quickly.
If radiofrequency ablation is not suitable for you, Anne will consider foam sclerotherapy, a series of injections that introduce a specialised chemical, mixed with air into the varicose veins.
